How did it all begin?

I wanted to be a doctor and a writer when I was growing up because I loved science. I’ve always been fascinated by our wonderful bodies and what they do for us, but I also love teaching and sharing this passion with others. I therefore worked very hard to find ways to educate people through my work whether it’s been at my clinic, on the telly, on radio or through writing these books for you. I’m very grateful for the opportunities I’ve had.

Why do you love being a doctor?

I love helping people feel better. I also love problem solving and as a doctor much of the work is like being a detective where someone comes in with one or more problems and you have to work out what it could be and how to fix it. It’s a very rewarding job.

How did you become a doctor?

After getting my grades in high school, I got a place at Glasgow University, which is where I studied for 5 years to become a doctor. I’ve always loved being a part of my community, and I love connecting with families, and so being a GP allowed me to fulfil this. To become a GP, I had a further 5 years of training and exams. It was hard work but I really enjoyed that time and love being a GP. I’ve been a doctor for 19 years.

What do you believe are the most important skills/qualities for a future doctor to display in general?

Good communication skills, someone who has a warm and kind heart, likes problem solving and is curious.

What advice do you have for kids who love science and wish to study a STEM subject?

Don’t let anything hold you back and just go for it!

What is your favourite human body fact?

Forget the speed of cars, trains and planes, did you know that information can travel along your nerves at about 400kmph?! The brain and nervous system are so clever and we still are learning new things about them today…

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever seen?

Babies being born - it’s the most incredible feeling when you see new life come into the world, it always feels like a miracle. I’ve helped to deliver many babies and each one has felt so special.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

Meeting lots and lots of different people from different backgrounds and cultures. I see and treat up to 40 people a day in my clinic, so I get to meet and help a lot of different people.

What are your top tips to stay healthy all year long?

Make sure you go to bed on time and get your sleep because it’s so important for the body and all its functions, which get to work when your body rests. Eat the rainbow - everyday try to get as many colours as possible of your fruits and veggies to keep you healthy. Exercise or move your body every day. Get out into the fresh air everyday, especially when it’s light outside to get some of that very important vitamin we get from the sun - Vitamin D!
