World of Warcraft is the largest massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in the world. In 2014 the game’s creator, Blizzard Entertainment, announced that it had over 100 million accounts since being released in 2004.
It currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscribers. Users buy a subscription to control a character avatar to complete tasks, fight monsters, explore landscapes and interact with other players.
It has since spawned a franchise encompassing two board games, a trading card game, a collectible miniatures game, a comic book series, and now a movie.
World of Warcraft is set in the sprawling world of Azeroth, although within this there are multiple other worlds.
Its history stretches back over 10,000 years to the War of the Ancients, when the Pangea-like continent of Kalimdor was split by the Great Sunderling and a vast font of arcane power called the Well of Eternity was destroyed.
Over the ensuing years, three wars and a succession of cataclysmic events scarred the world’s many regions, borne by conflicts between elves, trolls, dwarves, orcs, goblins and humans.
Now most of Azeroth’s kingdoms belong to one of two political factions: the Horde and the Alliance.
