Eighth Grade
With the implementations of Common Core and STEM (Science Engineering Math Technology) over the past few years, the curriculum in the US is changing, broadening, and challenging our teachers and students. These new directions in education have opened up a new world of learning, allowing students to make a shift from ordinary text books to supplemental materials, an increase in Informational text, and incorporating more technology. But how do you know what to look for when researching proper materials to support these new standards? One key element is Informational text. Informational Text is a subset of the larger category of non-fiction (Duke & Bennett-Armistead, 2003). Its primary purpose is to inform the reader about the natural or social world and is supported by a variety of structures such as a glossary, timelines, maps, diagrams, cutaways, definitions embedded on a page, plus similar characteristics often found in nonfiction resources and can be in a linear or nonlinear layout.
