“I AM LOOKING TO ACQUIRE MORE CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE AND ROMANTASY.”

Emily Bedford, Editorial Director, Canelo

I am looking to acquire more contemporary romance, whether sports, workplace, holiday, dark or paranormal, as well as romantasy. Romances with a distinctive voice and hint of whimsy are my favourite!

I have worked at Canelo now for seven years, previously working on non-fiction at Bloomsbury, but I have been a lifelong romance champion and fan. Overseeing my own romance list is a literal dream come true, acquiring and editing the type of novels that inspired me to become a publisher in the first place.

A book I’m proud of…

I am proud to have published Princeweaver, the first queer romantic fantasy on Canelo’s list. The novel is lyrical, confronting yet hopeful, inspired by Welsh history and folklore and exploring themes of colonialism, self and rebellion in a queernormative world through a magical lens.

A book I wish I'd published...

A book I wish I’d published is First-Time Caller by B.K. Borison because it captures all the depth and meaning that lies in romance as a genre that is often overlooked by those who don’t read in this space. Full of nostalgia and whimsy and a delicious slow-burn, First-Time Caller also explores grief, parenting, loneliness and how to be vulnerable – the perfect balance of real, relatable issues with a hopeful, uplifting conclusion.
