DK CHILDREN'S

“MY PASSION LIES IN BRINGING KNOWLEDGE AND WONDER TO YOUNG READERS.”

James Mitchem, Publisher, DK Children’s

As a publisher in the DK Children's team, I've spent nearly 20 years creating illustrated nonfiction books for children aged 7 and up. My passion lies in bringing knowledge and wonder to young readers through visually stunning and informative books, collaborating with talented authors, designers, and illustrators to shape ideas into beautiful and inspiring works.

At DK, I primarily commission in science, history, and popular culture, with a particular interest in projects featuring innovative visual approaches. I'm always keen to receive submissions that can transform complex subjects into highly engaging and beautifully presented nonfiction works, especially those exploring emergent technologies, lesser-known historical narratives, or fresh takes on classics.

A book I’m proud of…

I'm incredibly proud to have published The History of Information by Chris Haughton. This monumental undertaking, 18 years in the making, masterfully blends intricate illustrations with accessible text, transforming a complex subject into something understandable and engaging. Its nomination for Children's Book of the Year at the 2024 British Bookseller Awards, as well as its multiple translations were incredibly rewarding.

A book I wish I’d published…

A book I wish I had published is Molly Oldfield's Everything Under the Sun. Its phenomenal success and ability to spark curiosity in countless readers, offering something for everyone, truly impresses me.
