Where to stay in Prague

File Name
Whether you’re looking to see the sights or venture beyond the crowds, Prague has something to offer every traveller on any budget. Split into five distinct areas surrounding the Vltava, the Czech Republic’s fairytale capital is easily navigable and every-inch alluring. Here, DK Eyewitness Editor Lucy Sara-Kelly explores the unique character and charm of Prague's areas, unveiling what each has to offer.

Staré Mesto

The medieval epicentre, the beating heart, the soul of the city: Staré Mesto is the perfect place to stay if you want to be in the midst of the action. Buzzing with vibrant bars, boutique hotels and budget-friendly hostels, the Old Town remains lively well into the night. Staying here will put you within walking distance of the Old Town Square, which is home to the beautiful Astronomical Clock and the imposing Church of Our Lady Before Týn. If you’re looking for lesser-known sights to visit, head to the nearby Baroque Library in the Clementinum – and don’t forget to look up at the masterfully painted ceiling.

Josefov

Prague’s historic Jewish quarter, Josefov, is tucked between the banks of the river and the Old Town. Quieter, and with fewer hotels than its boisterous neighbour, Josefov will give you a more authentic introduction to local life in Prague. A dazzling array of synagogues can be found here, as well as the illuminating Jewish Museum and Old Jewish Cemetery. For food, choose from an excellent range of kosher restaurants or splash out on Michelin starred dining at La Degustation.

Hradčany

Want a room with a view? Head to Hradčany, the hilly district which is dominated by Prague Castle (the largest castle complex in the world). Residing here will give you ample time to explore the castle’s fascinating grounds: why not wander past the historic houses lining Golden Lane, stand in awe of St Vitus’s Cathedral or watch the changing of the guard in the courtyard? Hradčany is also home to one of Prague’s most picturesque pockets, Nový Svět. Escape the crowds and ramble around this attractive tangle of colourful lanes, popping into the quaint café for a little pick-me-up.

Nové Město

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to places to stay in the not-so-new Nové Město. The commercial hub of the city, the New Town boasts a great range of hotels, not to mention countless restaurants and microbreweries. Here you'll find hip new haunts blending seamlessly with historic sites. The district is home to the National Theatre, Wenceslas Square and the National Museum, as well Frank Gehry’s Dancing House, a playful piece of modern architecture, and Prague’s largest music shop Bontonland. For some peace and quiet, why not while away an afternoon in Academia, a charming café-come-bookshop? Nové Město is also just a tram ride away from Vyšehrad, an impressive 10th-century fortress steeped in history above the riverbank.

Malá Strana

Endlessly enchanting Malá Strana is a kaleidoscope of pretty-pastel buildings, leafy public parks and winding cobbled lanes. Edging into the outskirts of the centre, this area offers must-see sights as well as more unassuming, local hotspots. Here you could take an evening stroll over Charles Bridge, a Gothic masterpiece spanning the Vltava; climb up the Lookout Tower on Petřín Hill for sweeping views of the city and beyond; or, wander around the insightful Kafka Museum. For food, you‘ve got the option to indulge in coffee and cake at the grand Café Savoy or try hearty Bohemian dishes in one of the many eateries hidden down the narrow streets.

Further afield

Keen to journey beyond this captivating city? Stay in the outskirts of Prague to discover gems such as Trade Fair Palace, Prague Botanical Gardens and Břevnov Monastery. If you fancy going even further field, hop on a train to the bewitching Karlštejn Castle, an imperial display of turrets and towers, or spend the day in the historic town of Kutná Hora, a treasure trove of Gothic architecture located in Central Bohemia.
