Our list is growing in bold new directions. Two books in particular capture this spirit perfectly: Fight to the Death: Human Stories from the Assisted Dying Debate by Paul Brand is a remarkable achievement. Paul takes a difficult, deeply personal subject and treats it with incredible grace and sensitivity. It’s a brave piece of publishing and, I believe, one of the most important books you’ll read this year. The Residency by C. D. Major is another standout, currently haunting the shelves of bookshops across the country. This atmospheric gothic suspense novel has had a flying start, and the praise it’s receiving from fellow writers suggest it’s going to be a long-term favourite. All of this whets the appetite for 2027.
If I can be a little indulgent, there are a few titles I’m personally keen to get into readers' hands. As a lifelong football fan, David Martindale’s Poverty, Prison, Premiership is a rare, powerful story that I just can’t wait for. For fellow spy fiction buffs, Vincent V. Severski’s Senate Square, 6pm is a masterclass in tension. We’re also continuing the iconic legacy of Stieg Larsson with Jan Stocklassa’s The Man Who Fell from the Sky, while Justin Vibbert’s The Last Whale Hunter is exactly the kind of gripping narrative non-fiction that fans of David Grann will adore. We’re redoubling our commitment to our core genre fiction areas of crime, thriller, romance and saga, and the way forward has never been clearer.
