Why don't I ever forget to breathe?

Even when you stop thinking about breathing, your brain will never forget...

Breathing, which is controlled by the brain stem, happens automatically, even when you're asleep. Your brain is constantly monitoring the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. If there's too much waste gas building up, the brain sends messages to the body telling you to breathe faster to bring in more oxygen.

But just because breathing is an involuntary function doesn’t mean you can't take control over your brain, like, for example, when you take deep breaths to slow your breathing down.
