“I AM KEEN TO EXPLORE IDEAS FOR BOOKS THAT DON’T SIT WITHIN TRADITIONAL CATEGORIES.”

Martina O’Sullivan, Executive Publisher, August Books

I am expanding our non-fiction publishing in social and cultural history, popular culture, popular science and gift. I am keen to explore ideas for books that don’t sit within traditional categories.

I head up August Books. I have 20 years’ experience working in trade, scholarly and academic publishing across a broad range of subjects with authors ranging from early career academics to celebrities and influencers. Authors I have worked with include Ruby Wax, Joanne McNally, Seth Godin, General Stanley McChrystal, Dr Rangan Chatterjee, Anne Boden, Drs John and Julie Gottman and Dr Robert Livingston.

My August books include the Sunday Times  and New York Times Bestseller Free Ride by Noraly Schoenmaker, Explaining AuDHD by Dr Khurram Sadiq, the New York Times bestseller When Women Ran Fifth Avenue by Julie Satow, Forgetting by Professor Scott A Small and Good, Occasionally Rhyming by Rob Stepney and Kathy Clugston.

A book I’m proud of…

A book I am proud to publish is The Conversation by Dr Robert Livingston which was shortlisted for the FT Business Book of the Year prize in 2021.  It was a much-needed book which explored how to talk about racism at work by a social scientist based at Harvard University.

A book I wish I’d published…

The book I would have loved to have published is The Million Dollar Mermaid, the autobiography of swimming champion and Hollywood star Esther Williams published back in 2000.  It’s a wonderful account of the heyday of Hollywood that is equal parts gossipy, funny and sad.
